I needed flake-out time after a whole day on my feet painting pretty pictures for my Coney Island project. Right at the bewitching rush hour, I left Silvermine Arts Center, plowed through miles and miles and miles of traffic to home to sit back, put my feet up and unfrazzle myself. This blog is not about being unfrazzled, rather it’s about watching the CMA (Country Music Association) awards, while I unwind. Tom and I love country music. Country music is all about the story. Every song is meant to pull on your heartstrings. You see, the music comes from the heart, about life’s hardships and happiness.
There are so many great singers and great contributors to our country music culture. But The Band Perry intrigued me tonight when they performed. They made a great sound. Like so many talented bands, Kimberly, Reid, and Neil Perry are siblings. In 2008, they were discovered by Garth Brooks’ manager Bob Doyle and subsequently have had top albums over the last six or so years. What made them prominent was that on Sunday, February 2, 2014, the band performed in the pre-game show of Super Bowl XLVIII. It gained positive publicity after offering to cover the burial expenses for the funerals of nine people (a mother and eight of her children) killed in an accidental house fire in the Greenville, Kentucky area. The band is also paying the costs of family members’ hotel expenses while the father and the surviving daughter are being treated for burns at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Cheers for The Band Perry.
No CMA would be complete without one of country music’s legends, Loretta Lynn on the right with Kasey Musgrave.
What’s your take on Country Music?
Whenever I listen to country music, I’m transported back in time to 2004-2006, those heavenly two years when my husband and I lived Texas. It was like our second honeymoon: the kids had moved out, and it was just the two of us, playing with horses and perusing the antique malls. So, lotsa fond memories for me in country music.
And just this weekend I discovered that my 2 year old grandson, whose parents are definitely NOT country music fans, LOVES it. My daughter puts the country video station on the TV and my grandson dances and croons along with the music – much to his hip-hop loving daddy’s dismay 😉
Maybe great memories are contagious? Thanks for a great post, Gail.
Chuckle Frances. How lovely. I hope your grandson set the world on fire when it’s time. My husband, Tom enjoyed your comment as much as I did. Thanks. Tom is responsible for my falling i love with country music. I learned to appreciate the culture not too long after we met, when he explained what beauty exudes from the sound and the lyrics. He goes back to Hank Williams, and the Grand Ole Opry when it was still young, and later Patsy Cline was a star. I fell in love with her and learned to play and sing “Crazy” and “Faded Love” on my guitar. It has all slipped away now, but I sure had fun.
Alison Krauss is my all-time fav, but i guess she is more Bluegrass. Still love the the CMA’s!
Katy, good to see you here. Tom loves Alison Krauss. I am not crazy about Bluegrass, but there is lots to be said for that culture as well as for country music. Got to listen to those lyrics, right?
I don’t typically listen to country music, but I do LOVE the Band Perry. They have an interesting crossover of country/pop that is very appealing. Much like Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood who have topped both the pop and country charts, they’ve found the right sound to cover both genres. Having visited Nashville last year, I’m in love with the lifestyle and downhome culture of country music’s origins and history, but the twang and redundant messages in country music can be enough to make me spit grits if I listen too long (LOL). At the same time, I can totally appreciate the artistry and talent that has paved the way for some amazing musicians. Rock on, sister!
Aren’t you something Paula? Thanks for the amazing comment. And yes, all so true, you really are on target with what those fantastic musicians are pouring out. Did you see the awards last night. Looks like sweet Carrie Underwood is having a baby. I love, love, love the way she dressed for the pregnancy stage. So elegant. She is quite the role model.
great blog as always
Charl, so good to see you here. Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your comment, thank you.
